I loved Fred Vargas's books until this one. She is usually zany and imaginative but not so in A Climate of Fear. I expected to laugh out loud while enjoying an excellent mystery. That didn't happen with this too long and drawn out plot involving a Robespierre Associaton. A Climate of Fear is the ninth novel in Fred Vargas’ hugely popular Commissaire Adamsberg series, which follows the detectives of the Serious Crime Squad in Paris’s 13 th arrondissement. In this installment, Adamsberg investigates two apparently unconnected sets of murders: the first took place on a remote Icelandic island ten years earlier, while the second takes place in modern-day Paris and seems to be linked to a mysterious association dedicated to the early years of the French.
